APC Support Groups Leader Denies Defection, Demands Relief for Nigerians
The Director General of the Confederation of APC Support Groups, Professor Kailani Muhammad, has dismissed claims that he had defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress, insisting that he remains committed to the party despite grievances over what he described as neglect of grassroots support groups.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday after a national general meeting of the Confederation, Muhammad said support groups that worked for the victory of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima in the 2023 general elections had not received adequate recognition from the government.
He maintained, however, that the group would continue to support the administration in the interest of national development and party stability.
“We did not fight for a temporary reward; we fought for the progress of Nigeria, and we remain committed to seeing this administration succeed for the sake of our people,” he said.
The APC support groups’ leader recalled the formation of the Tinubu Shettima Network (TSN) in 2022, which he said mobilised thousands of supporters nationwide and organised the “Walk-the-Talk” campaign in support of the Tinubu-Shettima presidential ticket.
Muhammad also recounted internal crises within the Amalgamated APC Support Groups, saying he intervened to stabilise the structure ahead of the 2023 polls.
According to him, the aftermath of the elections and alleged mismanagement of funds meant for support groups led to the establishment of the Confederation of APC Support Groups as a “transparent and unshakeable home for loyal party members.”
While reaffirming loyalty to the APC-led administration, Muhammad expressed concern over the economic and security challenges facing the country.
He said rising inflation and insecurity were worsening the hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians and urged the government to urgently provide relief measures.
“As a leader who lives among the people, I cannot close my eyes to the realities on the ground. The rising inflation is squeezing the life out of the common man, and insecurity continues to threaten our communities,” he stated.
Muhammad said constructive criticism of government policies should not be interpreted as disloyalty, adding that “true loyalty means speaking the truth to power.”
He also denied rumours circulating on social media alleging that he had dumped the APC for another political party.
“This is an utter lie, born out of pure wickedness and political desperation. I am a pillar of this party, and I am not going anywhere,” he declared.
The APC chieftain further rejected allegations of religious bigotry levelled against him following comments he made concerning claims raised by some members of the United States Congress regarding violence and insecurity in Nigeria.
According to him, his remarks were motivated by a desire to promote peace and national unity rather than division.
Muhammad said the Confederation of APC Support Groups would continue to stand behind the ruling party while advocating policies that would ease the suffering of Nigerians.
“We support our party leadership, we demand relief for our citizens, and we stand together for a united and prosperous nation,” he added.
