Nigeria’s drive toward sustainable energy and climate-smart technologies took center stage on the global platform as Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General and CEO of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), delivered a powerful keynote address at the 2025 World Refrigeration Day celebration in Paris, France, and also participated in the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany.
At the Paris event, held at Les Salons Hoche on June 18, Dr. Abdullahi emphasized the critical importance of adopting smart and sustainable refrigeration technologies in Nigeria. He noted that efficient cooling solutions are not only vital for preserving food and vaccines but are also essential to achieving the nation’s development priorities under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind in the application of smart, sustainable refrigeration technologies. From food security to healthcare and energy efficiency, sustainable cooling is central to our national development goals,” Dr. Abdullahi stated.
Dr. Abdullahi represented Nigeria alongside Prince Ade Omole, a prominent Diaspora leader and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) promoter. The global event convened key stakeholders from across continents to explore the role of refrigeration in ensuring societal well-being — including food quality, public health, animal welfare, and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence.
Moderated by international energy expert Dr. Mariana Castaño, the session featured contributions from dignitaries and policymakers from France, Senegal, Kuwait, India, and the European Commission, all focused on sharing innovations, success stories, and overcoming sector challenges.
Nigeria Reaffirms Climate Commitment at Bonn UN Conference
In a related development, Dr. Abdullahi confirmed his participation in the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC) in Bonn, Germany. The global conference convened world leaders to evaluate climate policy progress and strengthen collective actions against climate change.
“I joined the Nigerian delegation, which included federal and state officials. We actively participated in technical sessions and coordination meetings to reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to the global climate agenda,” Dr. Abdullahi revealed.
He stressed the ECN’s unwavering role in driving the national energy transition through research, innovation, and international collaboration.
“My participation underscores ECN’s commitment to supporting sustainable energy policies in alignment with global climate goals,” the DG added.
Both international engagements reflect Nigeria’s increasing visibility and leadership in advancing sustainable energy, technology innovation, and climate action on the world stage.
