Breaking: Northwest group hails Sokoto's return to 'welfarist' governance policy

The Northwest Progressives Forum (NPF) has commended what it described as 'the return of welfarism as a state policy by Sokoto State under Governor Ahmed Aliyu, with the 2024 Ramadan salary bonus for workers and pensioners and others in the State.

A media statement signed by the group's Direcror of Research and Documentation, Sani Wakili at the weekend, noted that  "the last time Sokoto experienced welfarist as its governor was during the era of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, who made life a lot easier for the state's workforce through  prompt payment of salaries and sundry welfare packages for the people of the State regardless of religious affinities".

It would be recalled that in an effort to ensure that Muslims in Sokoto State start this year’s Ramadan Fast with ease, Governor Ahmed Aliyu approved the payment of half salary bonus as Ramadan gift to all civil servants, primary school teachers, local government staff as well as pensioners in the state.

The group further stated that the current administration in Sokoto "has started following the footsteps of welfarism as a state policy and this means the welfare legacies of Wamakko are gradually returning  after years of hardship under the PDP".

The group also rejoiced with the people of Sokoto State over the recovery of kidnapped Almajiris and "bringing them back unharmed."

The statement  also noted that the Ramadan bonus could be a birthday gift to the "foremost political godfather of Sokoto politics, Senator Wamako, who weeks ago, clocked 71 years.
