Lagos West: Tribunal Upholding Adebule's Victory, Mockery of Judicial System, Says PDP Group

Lagos West: Tribunal Upholding Adebule's Victory, Travesty  of Justice

The Peoples Democratic Party National Youth of wing , Northern region have condemned the judgement of the election  tribunal  sitting on over the case of the PDP candidate ,Mr Adewale Segun Sunday, popularly known as ‘Aeroland’ the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Mrs Idiat Adebule

The group, which described  verdict  by the judges presiding over the Lagos West Senatorial Election Tribunal  as nothing less the travesty of justice insisted the PDP candidate  clearly won the election.

The National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Lagos had  dismissed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s petition seeking to nullify the victory of Senator Adebule Idiat Oluranti in the February 25 senatorial election.
The PDP Candidate who was dissatisfied with the outcome of the election  approached the tribunal with a petition marked EPT/LAG/SEN/04/2023, seeking to reverse  the APC candidate's  victory as affirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

However , the tribunal said it ruled  in accordance with the appellate court judgment that the petitioners having failed to apply for the issuance of pre-hearing notice, were deemed to have abandoned the Petition.

Stating  that “The applications of the 1st and 2nd respondents succeed on the merit and the petition is accordingly dismissed having been abandoned by the petitioners,” the tribunal held."

But the PDP Youth Wing, Northern Region group in a press statement signed its Chairman,Hon. Ibrahim Ahmadu said in the ruling, which was delivered on Friday, August 4th, has raised  questions about merit of the case via fairness and integrity.

The statement further reads : "We are calling on  the appellate court to champion the cause of justice, ensuring an outcome that is more reflective of the principles of fairness to look in into the case based on its merit and not political technicalities.

"The pronouncement issued by the Tribunal Chairman has ignited not only
apprehension amongst the electorate in the Lagos West Senatorial district, but
questioned the credibility of Nigeria's
justice system.

"Against this background,We vow to protest the judgement  at  the appellate court and rectify the pronounced injustice meted out to our PDP candidate. "
